E. African Media Marks World Press

KAMPALA (May 3) XINHUA - Media representatives from 12 countries in east Africa held
their annual conference in Ugandan capital Kampala Wednesday to mark the World Press
The conference under the auspices of Eastern Africa Media Institute (EAMI) adopted the
Kampala Declaration 2000.
The declaration says that freedom of information is a fundamental human right, and
information should be in the service of humanity. "Governments in the eastern Africa
region should guarantee and safeguard press freedom as an inviolable human right of their
peoples," it declares.
The declaration advocates that government should promote "the free flow of ideas
by word and image among nations and within each nation".
EAMI members states include Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, Mauritius,
Madagascar, the Comoros, Ethiopia, Somalia,
Eritrea and Uganda.
