SOMALIA/UNITED KINGDOM: BBC TRAINS SOMALI JOURNALISTS
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom ; 08-May-2000 12:00:00 am

Text of report from Somali newspaper `Qaran' web site on 3rd May

A four-week training course for Somali journalists ended at Shaamo Hotel, Mogadishu, yesterday.

The course, funded by the EU, was conducted by instructors from the BBC's training department. Topics covered included ethics of journalism, general principles of journalism, the role of the media, human rights, democracy, first aid and others.

Miss Maria Frauenrath, head of the BBC training department, expressed the hope that the journalists who attended the training would make use of what they had learnt for the benefit of their respective newspapers. She said they had already conducted similar training before in Mogadishu and Hargeysa, adding that they would conduct some more in Boosaaso and other towns.

Yunis Ali Nur, who is also one of the BBC instructors, underscored the importance of using the media for the common good. He reminded the journalists of what the media could do if used negatively. He took the example of the genocide in Rwanda, in which the media played a leading role in the death of about one million people.

Umar Dini Gedi, the managing editor of 'Qaran' newspaper, thanked the BBC instructors for crossing oceans and coming to Somalia to impart knowledge to young journalists who lacked quality training in journalism.
