Community leaders in Arta fail to nominate Parliamentarians
Arta, May 22 - The Somali Peace talks in DJibouti drag on with no
real progress. The preliminary talks by traditional Somali community leaders which were
aimed at paving the way for the constitution of parliament which would in turn form an
interim government, have stalled after most traditional leaders failed to nominate
representatives of their respective communities to proposed interim parliament.
Some of the community leaders were not happy with the quota
allotted for their respective communities, while others were reluctant to go ahead with
the plan until their clan territories remain occupied by other clans which were a party to
the deliberation in Arta.
The Puntland community leaders had however, expressed their
desire to go back to their communities and the local administration for consultation
before they appoint their representatives to the parliament. Djibouti, the host country
is, however, trying to pressure them to nominate their deputies in order to speed up the
process. A Puntland delegation led by the deputy President is participating in the talks
in Djibouti
