UNHCR Repatriates Over 350 Somali Refugees

NAIROBI, Kenya (PANA) - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has
repatriated 357 Somali refugees from camps in northern Kenya to their
country of origin. 
The agency said Monday in Nairobi that three flights were used since
Thursday to take back the refugees. 
UNHCR chartered aircraft flew Thursday 120 men, women and children, and
Friday 100 others to Bossasso Friday. 
The agency said that 77 adult females and 126 males had voluntarily decided
to return to their country. 
It added that they will be settled at Bossasso, in the self-proclaimed
independent Somaliland, from where they fled nearly a decade ago when
Somalia descended into chaos following the ouster of former ruler, Mohamed
Siad Barre. 
Each returnee has been provided with housing material, beddings and 129 US
dollars for their upkeep in the first nine months. 
They have also been immunised against tropical diseases such as yellow
Somalia has had no central government since 1991 when clan based factions
overthrew Barre. But northern Somalia, also known as Somaliland, formerly a
British colony, has declared its independence, which has never been
recognised by the international community.
