Fighting for Control of Bridge
Flares in Southern Somalia
MOGADISHU (Feb. 25) XINHUA - Fierce fighting erupted early on Friday for control of the
strategic Garawlay bridge in the southern Somali region of Lower Shabelleh between the
Islamic courts militiamen and the advancing forces of the Rahanwein Resistance Army (RRA).
According to the reports received through the short-wave radio, the RRA fighters on
Thursday night attacked the bridge near Kurrunwarrey district, about 140 km south of the
Somali capital Mogadishu.
Nearly 100 militiamen equipped with one battle wagon launched a counter attack on the
RRA men at the bridge just before dawn Friday.
As each side proved its determination to over-run the other, the battle wagon of the
Islamic courts, the only one involved in the clash, has hit a land mine which destroyed it
on the spot.
There are no exact casualty figures available at this stage as the fighting still
continued on Friday afternoon. However, confirmed reports said one of the destroyed battle
wagon's occupants has died.
