SOMALIA: Puntland investigating inflation
problem
NAIROBI, 23 April (IRIN) - The self-declared
autonomous region of Puntland, northeastern Somalia, has set up
a committee to investigate rising inflation in the region. It
will attempt to find out why inflation has risen dramatically in
the past two weeks, despite the fact that no new currency has
been imported into the region - in contrast with the situation
in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The five-member committee
includes two cabinet ministers and three senior civil servants,
the editor of the weekly 'Sahan' newspaper, Muhammad Deq
Abdiqadir, told IRIN.
Local sources said the Somali shilling had
been exchanging at the rate of 15,000 to US $1 last week, but on
Monday the rate rose to 18,400 to US $1. Hyper-inflation in
Mogadishu, because of importation of newly printed currency, has
created economic uncertainty and fear in Puntland. Puntlanders
have become too nervous to hold on to their Somali shillings,
and are buying up dollars. Muhammad Deq said another reason for
local inflation could be "speculation by dealers who want
to cash in on people's fears and uncertainties".
On 19 and 20 April, crowds stoned the Bosaso
money market, the main exchange market in the region, forcing it
briefly to close, local sources said. On Monday morning,
thousands of Bosaso residents prayed together in the football
stadium. Muhammad Deq told IRIN they had prayed "for rains,
and against those bringing fake money in".
