BBC MONITORING INTERNATIONAL REPORTS: SOMALIA: PUNTLAND SAYS IT WILL DEFEND ITSELF ANY AGGRESSION FROM THE DJIBOUTI CONFERENCE

 BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom ; 26-Aug-2000 12:00:00 am ; 267 words

Text of report by Somali pro-Puntland regional government radio from Gaalkacyo on 26th August

Dear listeners, there is the so-called Somali national reconstruction and reconciliation conference which has been going on in Arta, Djibouti, in the past few months. However, many Somali people, both within and abroad, have rejected it because the conference is based on humiliation and was not in the interests of the Somali nation. It is, therefore, worth mentioning that the conference will lead to renewed clans fighting in Somalia since the Somali people are not convinced by the conference outcome.

We know what the type of administration Arta conference wants to bring to our country means. We, the Puntland people, are enjoying a considerable degree of security. We are thankful to the Puntland president, Col Abdullahi Yusuf, who struggled hard to bring about security to our people and we vow to work with him to make sure that the hard earned peace and security in Puntland is not taken away from us. We therefore call on every Puntland citizen and say that it is time to counter those who are planning to disrupt our security.

We know very well that fighting is not a solution to many problems, but circumstances will force us to take up the gun with the aim of defending our country. We all know what the participants of the Arta conference are talking about and what they want.

We call upon the Somali intellectuals, politicians, businessmen, mothers, students and everyone else to prepare yourselves to counter any aggression that would affect our security.

We must support our leader whom we have elected and who brought peace and tranquillity in our country. We thank God for the peace and security in our country.
