BBC WORLD SERVICE AT 1705 GMT AND
THIS IS RICK WELLS WITH FOCUS ON AFRICA
Rick Wells: Tensions
are running high in the Somali town of Jowhar, north of the
capital Mogadishu as a result of serious clashes yesterday between
the Hawadle and Gaalje'l clans in a nearby village called
Daif. The confrontation, which resulted in many dead and wounded
was the latest in a long-feud between the two clans as our
correspondent Hassan Barrisa reports in this fax from Mogadishu.
The tension has also spread in the town of Beletweyn:
Hassan Barrise: According
to independent sources from Jowhar 90 km from Mogadishu, nearly
100 heavily armed militiamen from the Gaalje'l clan have attacked
the Daif village which is mainly inhabited by the Hawadle clan.
The ensuing heavy exchange of gunfire left at least 18 people
killed and more than 10 others wounded inside the village. The
bodies of 13 people were brought to the hospital in Mogadishu last
night. In addition, 7 wounded people were brought to the hospital.
Some of the bullet-ridden bodies were shattered beyond
recognition. The fighting which started just before noon yesterday
ended at about 17 hours local time when the Hawadle clan
militiamen conducted a counter attack. The fighting then spread to
the nearby village of Iga Abdulle Iyow. More heavy exchanges of
gunfire ensued when both sides brought in heavy machine guns and
rocket propelled grenades. There has been no reported confirmation
of the number of dead and wounded of this latest confrontation in
Iga Abdulle Iyow village. However, a countryman who fled the scene
of the fighting immediately after the shooting subsided, told the
people in Jowhar town that he saw over 9 dead bodies inside the
village. A man from the Hawadle clan in Jowhar town told me 5 of
their men were lost in the fighting, whereas other
sources indicated that the Gaalje'l people lost 13 fighters. Both
villages are now deserted following the fighting. The towns of
Beletweyn and Jowhar are tense as word of fighting between
the sides reached places where the Hawadle and Gaalje'l clans live
together.
Rick Wells: That is a
fax report from Hassan Barrise in Mogadishu.

Somali clans battle
Somalia has been ravaged by clan wars since 1991
At least 25 people have been killed and 18 others injured in a
new outbreak of fighting between rival clans in Somalia.
Heavily armed militiamen from the Hawadleh and Galjel
sub-clans clashed on Monday in the Shabelle region, nearly
90km(55 miles) north of the capital Mogadishu.
Witnesses say though the fighting had ceased on Tuesday, the
area remained tense.
Somalia, which has had no central government since the fall
of Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991, is divided between feuding
warring clans.
As many as 20 people were killed last month in clashes
between the two rival sub-clans.
Long running rivalry
Witnesses of the Monday clashes said the Galjel clan militia,
apparently retaliating for an earlier attack, ambushed Hawadleh
positions in the village, destroying houses.
Mr Salat, seeking international support
|
There was no indication that the
unrest was linked to the recent election of Abdulkassim Salat
Hassan as Somalia's first president since 1991.
Mr Hassan and 245 members of parliament were elected after a
three months peace conference held in neighbouring Djibouti.
The new president received a warm welcome when he made an
unexpected visit to Somalia at the weekend.
"The time of lawlessness and anarchy is over. I will save
the Somali people," he told a cheering crowd at the Mogadishu
stadium during the visit.
International support
He is now on his first international tour beginning and has
left for New York, after visiting Egypt, to seek international
support from world leaders attending the UN Millennium summit.
Several warlords opposed to the Djibouti peace initiative have
warned the international community not to recognise the new
civilian authority, saying it could lead to an escalation of
bloodshed.

MOGADISHU - At least 38 people, most of them civilians, have
been killed and many others wounded in interclan fighting this
week in southern Somalia's Middle Shabelle region, travellers
arriving in Mogadishu from the area alleged.
The fighting, which took place yesterday and reportedly claimed
the lives of 20 civilians, pitted militiamen of the Galjel subclan
against their Hawadle rivals in the villages of Daif, Burane and
Ega Abdulle.
The Somali Xogogal newspaper put the death toll at more
than 50.
