First Private FM Radio in Bosaso

Story Filed: Wednesday, June 20, 2001 1:20 PM EST

Jun 20, 2001 (UN Integrated Regional Information Network/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX)-- An FM radio station has started broadcasting in Bosaso, the commercial capital of the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, northeastern Somalia. It was the first privately owned independent radio station in Puntland, Ali Abdi Aware, the proprietor of the new radio, told IRIN.

The radio received its broadcasting licence on 15 June and was inaugurated on 17 June. Aware said the radio would also have two studios in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, and Qardho, 250 km south of Bosaso, for rebroadcast purposes. "We will provide educational and other public-interest material," Aware told IRIN.

The radio would be totally independent of the Puntland authorities and "will not reflect the views of the administration", he said. Aware also said he was planning to open a television station in Bosaso in October, the first of its kind in Puntland.
