Opinions expressed in this column are those of the contributors and not necessarily those of SW. SOMALIA: STRANGE BEHAVIOUR SINCE SEPTEMBER 11 By
Somali-North American Concerned Citizens
Following the September 11 terrorist attacks on New
York and Washington, various parts of Somalia have been showing peculiar
behavior. Any keen observer of the Somali situation would take note of
the following: 1.
The open confrontation within the membership of the Arta Faction/TNG
mainly on religious and ideological basis. Is it the beginning of the
end for Djibouti sponsored Somali newest political faction? And why the
eruption of ideological differences after the USA-led coalition declared
war on terror? Why did they stage a public demonstration in support of
Usama Bin Laden in Mogadishu and Why did Abdulkasim Salad Hassan with
Omar Faruq provide funds for the recent anti-American public rally in
Mogadishu while double- talking to
the Americans on that particular subject? 2.
The collapse or to be exact, the near-collapse of Al-Itihad-Tima
Weyne dominated Congress in Garowe on purely secular and ideological
basis. 3.
The influx of Al Itihad militia into Puntland State from Southern
Somalia to seek military basis for the purpose of protecting Usama Bin
Laden in the ancient caves of the eastern mountain ranges of Puntland
State. Some of this militia transported in undercover operation had been
captured recently in Galkayo. 4.
The on-going clashes between forces of Muse Sudi Yalahow and
Abdulkasim Salad Hassan in Mogadishu saw new weapons quite different
from the traditional technicals and heavy machine guns.
The reported teleguided missiles and re-use of old Soviet SAM
rockets in Mogadishu clashes is a new development in the Somalia’s
civil war. This might be indication that new military experts arrived
Somalia with a purpose and objectives beyond the Somali Civil War.
It
is important to note here that while Somalia is experiencing this
strange phenomenon after September 11, Somalia’s neighbors started
looking inward because of internal destabilization and fear of collapse
of their respective regimes. Will these regimes survive having Mr. Bin
Laden and his new Somali religious extremists in the form of TNG, Al
Itihad and the above-named as their immediate neighbors? History will
tell. But,
Why does Mr. David Stephen, the UN Secretary_General Representative for
Somalia step up his diplomatic campaign to prop up a collapsing Al Itiad
dominated Arta Faction? How far did his contribution to Somali
Peace-making helped the UN Secretary-General win the Noble Price?
Is Somalia today more peaceful after the imposition of the
so-called the TNG? Would the International Court in the Hague hear the
misconduct and misdeeds of the UN personnel? |
