News Event of the Week

MARKA - Feb 22, 2002 (Click here - Yamayska News in Somali):
Galkayo, Puntland: Yamayska News report on the murder of Verena Karer
___________________________________________
English translation of Yamayska report by SHASNA:

MARKA - Feb 22, 2002 (Yamayska) - As confirmed by the BBC, Verena Karer, a European aid worker was today murdered in the port town of Marka. She was allegedly murdered by two unknown assailants.

Verena Karer, a sixty year old aid worker has been in Marka since early nineties, and she was murdered while Mr. Randolph Kent of the UN and a delegation he was leading were in town.

Mr. Kent whose last day on the job is February 28th, is well known for his one sided meddling and inappropriate interference in Somali clan politics, and of course his unwavering support of the Arta group that he helped create. According to people familiar with the situation, this is one of many unfortunate incidents that Mr. Kent has been in the midst of, and can also be concluded is an ugly and a miserable good-bye for the UN official.

The murder has deeply saddened the people of Marka in particular and the civil society of the Shabeelada Hoose region in general, and they insist that they are indeed peaceful people. They vehemently insist that the murderers of the aid worker are none other than the invaders of Marka and surroundings; the same invaders that Mr. Randolph Kent is always supporting and acting on their behalf, which according to them, clearly conveys the message that he, Mr. Kent and his UN offices, support the illegal confiscation of their land, farms and properties.

Twelve years since eruption of the Somali civil war, Marka and surroundings has been illegally appropriated by militias from other regions of Somalia who initially came to the region as clan fighters [A. Salad Hassan's sub-clan], then Islamic courts [led by Col. Hassan Dahir Aweys, US most wanted list and a close cousin of A. Salad Hassan] and now claim to be full fledged members of Somali transitional government [Arta group led by A. Salad Hassan.]
