Somali
faction leaders and other politicians opposed to the results of the
Djibouti conference are streaming into Nairobi, Kenya, to hold their
first joint meeting.
Muhammad
Qanyareh Afrah, Uthman Hasan Ali Ato [Mogadishu faction leaders] and
Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmad [president of Puntland] are already in Nairobi.
The other top Mogadishu faction leader, Husayn Muhammad Aydid, and Col
Ahmad Umar Jays [chairman of the Somali Patriotic Movement] are also
scheduled to arrive in the Kenyan capital. Towards the end of their
meeting, the faction leaders will adopt a common stand on the outcome
of the Djibouti conference.
The
Nairobi meeting comes on the heels of calls by the UN, EU and Arab
League, urging Somali faction leaders to work with the new government.
Ato is carrying a message from Muhammad Ibrahim Egal, the president of
the self-proclaimed Somaliland Republic, whom he met in Hargeysa
recently. Egal supports the meeting, although he is not expected to
attend it. He too is strongly opposed to the results of the Djibouti
conference.
