Sep 21, 2001 (Vanguard/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX)-- The
United States has ordered 100 warplanes to the Gulf region in response
to attacks on New York and Washington. Following is a chronology of
some recent U.S. military interventions abroad:
March 24, 1999 - SERBIA - U.S aircraft and ships take the lead in
NATO bombing campaign to force Belgrade to agree to an international
peace plan in Kosovo. The campaign ended on June 10 after Serb troops
began to withdraw from Kosovo and allow NATO peace-keeping forces (KFOR)
into the province.
Aug 20, 1998 - SUDAN & AFGHANISTAN - The United States launches
cruise missile strikes against bases in Afghanistan and a factory in
Sudan, saying they were linked to the bombings of U.S. embassies in
Kenya and Tanzania.
Feb 94-Sept 95 - YUGOSLAVIA - The United States, as part of NATO,
joins in air strikes against Serb forces.
1992-1994 - SOMALIA - At one stage
the United States had 28,000 troops committed to a humanitarian aid
mission in Somalia. The killing of 18
U.S. intervention troops in October 1993 led to a U.S. withdrawal
early in 1994.
Sept 1994 - HAITI - A multinational force dominated by U.S. troops
begins occupation of Haiti to restore democracy. U.S. commanders
transferred authority to the United Nations in January 1995.
July 1992 - BOSNIA - In the Bosnian war, the United States, as part
of NATO, agrees to use naval force in Adriatic to monitor U.N.
sanctions imposed on Serbia and Montenegro, which make up the rump
Yugoslav state. In April 1993 NATO began combat patrols with fighters
over Bosnia to enforce compliance with U.N. ban on flights, in
"Operation Deny Flight."
Aug 1990 - GULF - President Bush orders a military build-up in
Saudi Arabia after Iraq sends tanks and troops to annex Kuwait. Bush
commits the military to enforce U.N. resolutions demanding the
unconditional withdrawal of Iraqi forces. By the end of January 1991,
there were some 527,000 American troops in the Gulf. In January 1991,
U.S.-led coalition bombed Iraq heavily. Iraqi targets still come under
attack by Western planes policing two "no-fly" zones in the
North and South of the country.
Dec 1989 - PANAMA - President George Bush orders U.S. paratrooper
strike on Panama to support Panamanian-based U.S. forces in drive to
oust and capture military strongman Manuel Noriega in "Operation
Just Cause." Noriega was captured in January 1990 and sentenced
to jail on drug-running charges in the United States.
April 1986 - LIBYA - U.S. Air and Naval forces attack Libyan
coastal bases in retaliation for alleged Libyan-directed terrorist
attacks on U.S. targets. Two Air Force crewmen are killed when Libyan
batteries shoot down their F-111B bomber.
Oct 1983 - GRENADA - President Ronald Reagan sends U.S. troops to
the Caribbean island of Grenada, ostensibly to protect American
citizens after a leftist coup. About 300 military personnel from
Jamaica, Barbados, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Antigua also
took part. Eighteen U.S. servicemen died and 116 were wounded in the
operation.
Oct 1983 - LEBANON - U.S. Marines sent to Lebanon by President
Reagan as part of an international peacekeeping force are hit by
suicide truck-bomb attack against their Beirut barracks. Some 241
Marines and sailors are killed in the attack, which leads to end of
Marine participation in controversial peacekeeping effort.
April 1980 - IRAN - A U.S. commando mission to rescue 53 American
embassy hostages in Iran is abandoned in the desert, with the loss of
eight American lives, when a helicopter collides with a tanker
aircraft.
