Facts about Somalia’s Capital, Mogadishu | Somalia Watch Skip to content Introduction Mogadishu is currently the capital and largest city and seaport in Somalia. The city currently has an area of 35.14 mi². The constant state of danger within the country has made it difficult to measure the population of the city.
As a result, commissioning a census of the population proved to be difficult. It is estimated that the capital has between 1.5 to 3 million residents. Geography This capital is located on Somalia’s coast bordering the Indian Ocean.
It resides north of the equator within this city that breathes life into Somalia. Impoverished The city is filled with extreme poverty amongst its inhabitants. A little below fifty percent of the population suffers with extreme poverty daily.
There were even some sources that stated that more than three quarters of the population lives on less the two US dollars a day. More than forty percent of the residents need some kind of governmental assistance to sustain their living. Education Unfortunate for the education system within the city, it possesses one of the lowest enrollment rates around the world.
Sadly enough, there is an literacy rate amongst women of twenty five percent. Men enroll at almost double the rates of women. Still, their enrollment rates don’t peak past thirty sex percent.
Residents Return In recent years, the city has seen a heavy increase in the amount of residents returning to the country. The country has started to see some resemblance of stability which sparked this return. Millions of residents have taken the journey to return to their homeland.
Vocational Schools It is always a positive event to have a heavy influx of residents return to the capital city. This isn’t without a bit of conflict. All of the returning residents don’t possess skills to aid in the rebuilding of the capital.
Approximately only about 10,000 of the returning residents are skilled already. As a result, there has been an increase in the demand for vocational schools. The idea is for these schools to assist with the improvement of quality of life for residents and ultimately the country’s capital.
The Impact of Streetlights The combined efforts of the British and Norwegian governments were used to fund a project within the city for streetlight installation. Within the city, two of the city’s main street roads seen an influx of streetlights thanks to the above mentioned project. This allowed miles of city land to be illuminated therefore deterring criminal activity.
Mogadishu has seen positive changes ever since. Local Reference The world outside of Somalia knows the country’s capital city as Mogadishu. This isn’t the case for local residents.
Locally, the capital city is known as Hamar. Government Until 1991, the city was ruled by dictatorship. Mohamed Siad Barre, a major general, was the primary force behind this dictatorship.
His rule was ruthless beginning in 1969 until his demise in 1991. His dictatorship was overthrown in 1991. War The dwindling control of the Barre dictatorship left the city in chaos.
It sparked a civil war within the city’s limits. Divided is an understatement for the state of the citizen relations. There was a lack of law enforcement which left no room for control.
The lack of governmental presence allowed the city to become a war zone. Return of the Government The chaos within the city lasted until about 2000. After almost ten years of unrest amongst the citizens, there was a government reinstatement.
Abdulkassim Salat Hassan became the appointed president. Interestingly enough, there wasn’t an appointment of parliament until about four years later. SomaliaWatch Hey there!
